Toulouse, France is a fantastic place to visit. It is the largest city in southwest France. Toulouse has been nicknamed the “pink city” because many of its historical buildings were constructed from pink brick manufactured in the area.

Toulouse is a city rich with history and interesting things to do and see. When you become tired of wandering around, there are great places to dine and fantastic shopping choices to explore.

Le Capitole

This is the site of the original Town Hall, built in 1759. You can tour the historic building, and see busts of famous people of Toulouse, and gorgeous 19th and 20th-century paintings. Don’t forget to look up; the ceilings are painted, as well. Outdoors, the cobbled streets lead to a large main square that is a gathering place for tourists and natives alike. Here you can sample cassoulet, for which Toulouse is famous, and the shop is quaint little boutique.

St. Sernin-Basilica

Whoever said that old churches weren’t interesting is wrong. This restored Romanesque church has a charm all it’s own. It also has organs that must be seen to be believed. This is a must-see for anyone visiting Toulouse.

City of Space

If you are in the mood for something more contemporary, try this monument to all forms of space, such as satellites, rockets, communications, and weather. In the gardens stands a life-size space rocket, and there is also a wonderful planetarium with a variety of great shows. The best thing is that the shows have been translated into four languages via headphones, English being one of them.

Port de l’Ebouchure

This is the junction of the Canal du Midi, the Brienna Canal, and the Garonne River. Three picturesque bridges span the waterways, and at the reservoir, you can view a marble bas-relief of life on the Garonne. The many paths along the riversides provide great walking or biking, and if you would like a cruise, there are lovely boats that cruise the area.

Chateau Bellevue

Located in Toulouse, it is considered the best-preserved château in the area. It is currently used as a school, but the gardens aren’t to be missed. They contain hundred-year-old trees and interesting statuary. French people are very proud of their gardens and it is a great way to while away an afternoon.

Couvent des Jacobins

This gothic church is unassuming from the outside, but indoors the black marble floors will be something to admire. It is also the burial place of St. Thomas of Aquinas.

Musee de l’Histoire de la Medicine

This is a fun little museum that will not take up much of your time but is well worth it. It has exhibits on famous doctors of the area., some rather gruesome books depicting illnesses, old medical instruments and an old pharmacy full of colourful jars and apothecary items.

Augustins Monastery

This monastery became a museum after the French revolution. It is considered one of the best museums in France for paintings and sculpture.

Capitole Ballet

If you prefer culture, check out a world-renowned performance of classical or neo-classical ballet performance by the Capitole Ballet. Their reputation is excellent and you won’t be disappointed.

Le Galerie Municipale du Chateau d’Eau

This photography gallery is housed in a former water tower. Founded in 1974 by a Toulouse photographer named Jean Dreuzaide, it contains a breathtaking collection of historical and contemp0orary photos.
