Pittsburgh is situated in Southwestern Pennsylvania where the Allegheny, Monongahela, and Ohio Rivers meet. Pittsburgh is home to 370,000 people and 720 bridges. The city is known as the “Steel City” and is home to Pitt University and Carnegie Mellon University. Pittsburgh was established in 1758 and is now the largest inland port in the United States.

Carnegie Museums

Andrew Carnegie founded the Carnegie Institute in 1895. His goal was to help people enhance their lives through education and culture. Today there are four museums resulting from his efforts. The Carnegie Museum of Art is home to French impressionist and post-impressionist paintings. Also featured are Continental, American, and English decorative art displays. 

The Carnegie Museum of Natural History was founded in 1895 and today has one of the largest collections of dinosaur fossils, gems, and mineral displays. The Carnegie Science Center opened in 1991 is an interactive facility built to promote learning through science and technology. The Andy Warhol Museum was built in 1994. This museum proudly displays the art of Pittsburgh-born Andy Warhol.

Phipps Conservatory

Phipps is a thirteen-room glass building that features breathtaking gardens and tropical plants. Each room of the conservatory has a different theme. The Orchid Room has over 3000 orchids on display. The Stove Room houses tropical plants and turns into the Butterfly Forrest from April to October. Outside the conservatory, you will find the “Discovery Garden” which offers interactive education for children, and the Japanese Gardens.

Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium

The Pittsburgh Zoo covers 77 acres and is home to over 25 endangered species. The zoo has a large range of natural habits including the Asian Forrest, African Savanna, Tropical Forrest, Cheetah Valley, and Kids Kingdom. The zoo is home to the rare Komodo Dragon and the equally rare Tree Kangaroos. The aquarium houses stingrays, sharks, penguins, octopuses, and live coral, just to name a few.

Sand Castle Water Park

Sand Castle was built on the shore of the Monongahela River. This water park is open from June to August each year. The park has 14 major waterslides, a large wave pool, a hot tub, swimming pools, an arcade, a gift shop, and Formula One Go-karts. At night the “Sand Bar” section of the park features bars, swimming pools, an arcade, and hot tubs on a boardwalk setting.

Kennywood Park

Kennywood Park is a historic landmark built in 1898. This amusement park features numerous roller coasters, water rides, arcades, children’s rides, games, bungee jumping, and paddle boats. The Whip is one of the oldest rides in the park and has been operational since 1918.

The Incline

The Incline has been in operation since 1877. The Incline climbs to Mt. Washington, one of Pittsburgh’s many neighbourhoods. Mt. Washington has many observation decks overlooking the city. USA Weekend Magazine ranked the view the second most beautiful view in the United States.

The National Aviary

The Aviary is located on Pittsburgh’s Northside. It is home to over 600 birds from all over the world. The Aviary is a sanctuary for several species of endangered birds. The Australian Palm Cockatoo and the Victoria Crowned Pigeon can be seen here. Some other birds featured are hummingbirds, owls, flamingos, parrots, the Snowy Egret, and the African Penguin.

Gateway Clipper Fleet

Consisting of six riverboats, the Gateway Clipper Fleet offers tours of Pittsburgh via the rivers all year long. They have dance cruises that feature different types of music for just about any taste in music. They also offer one-day vacations and special events.

Just Ducky Land and River Tours

This tour takes you through the streets of Pittsburgh in a World War II amphibious vehicle known as the DUKW. These vehicles have the ability to drive from land straight into the water. This unique tour takes you past historical and cultural sites throughout the city.

Point State Park

This beautiful park is a registered historical landmark. It is located in the place where the three rivers meet known as the “Golden Triangle”. The park features a beautiful fountain at the water’s edge. The park hosts various festivals throughout the warmer months, including the Pittsburgh Three Rivers Regatta.
