Edinburgh is one of those cities that you might not think is good for kids, but in truth, there is so much to do within the confines of the city and just outside. Edinburgh Zoo
The Zoo is such a wonderful attraction and you can’t beat Edinburgh Zoo. Full of wonderful animals and creatures you can spend the whole day going from habitat to habitat and enjoying the animals. Take a look online to find out when feeding times are or when there may be specific talks so you and the kids can learn a little more during your visit. Butterfly and insect world
This is a lovely attraction just outside of Edinburgh. Made up of a series of connected hothouses that lead onto a garden centre, you can walk through and experience some incredible wildlife and exotic plants. If you are feeling brave, you can handle some of them. Or just watch from afar. You can also feed some of the fish and relax in the gardens. Gorgie City farm
Stick with the theme of animals, this inner-city far is a free attraction and one that you must visit. Set up with the intention of educating inner-city children on farming, it has now been established for over three decades. Here you will find sheep, pigs, ducks, chickens, goats, ponies, and Jersey cattle. You can also check out the petting lodge where you and the kids can get up close to some of the best little animals including hamsters, guinea pigs and even a snake. There is also an on-site cafe servicing homecooked food. A great place to visit for the whole family to enjoy.
Arthurs Seat and Holyrood Park
Holyrood Park is the reason Edinburgh has its rugged skyline. With open and vast countryside with hills and crags, this is a great location to visit with the family if you are looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the city without needing to go too far. Arthurs Seat is one of the four bigger peaks in Holyrood Park and is well worth climbing up if you are looking for something a little more active to do. Don’t forget to pack your picnic.
The Potter trail
This is a great thing to do for any Harry Potter fans and there are even free walking tours that you can book on to if you are hoping to find things to do that are budget-friendly. During the tour, you will be able to experience some of the iconic locations that have inspired the Harry Potter books and films. You can find Lord Voldermorts resting place and even see the cafe where JK Rowling first penned book one. This is a great thing to do with kids and adults who love Harry Potter.
Edinburgh Botanic gardens
Sometimes you need to head to a place that is open and calming, and there is nothing better than Edinburgh Royal Botanic Gardens. There are over 70 acres of plants and shrubs, but you also have the rock garden and arboretum to enjoy as well. In the main building, there is usually fun and interactive activities to do in the main building along with a shop and a cafe to enjoy some food and drinks when you need a bit of relaxation. This is a lovely place to visit with children of all ages and could be the perfect option on a warm and sunny day.
National Museum of Scotland
If you want to take the opportunity for your children to learn about the history of Scotland, then look no further than the National Museum of Scotland. There are some incredible exhibits here showcasing some of the past memorabilia and history that Scotland has to offer. There are also some amazing interactive elements that children of all ages will enjoy getting involved with. Camera Obscura and World of illusions
This is an intriguing attraction that will certainly be a great option for when the weather isn’t so great as it is indoors. Obscura meaning dark room essentially means that this attraction is all about the strange and the unique. This showcases some of Edinburgh’s finest moments and the world of illusions looks at different ways light can affect patterns and the way things look. It is certainly an interesting attraction. During the holidays you may find that there are activities and events taking place.
The Edinburgh dungeon
The Edinburgh Dungeon is another great attraction and with it being indoor you can rely upon it when the weather isn’t so good. You will head underground where live actors and interactive rides will take you on a journey of discovery through the dungeons of Edinburgh. A fascinating attraction but one that might be suitable for older children.
